Thriving Community Project
Galvanising the community in the year of King Charles Coronation as the Head of State
The Thriving Community Project began in 2023 and galvanised the community in the year of King Charles coronation as the head of state. A series of sports events were organised – primarily cricket and badminton which had the effect of bringing the community together whilst tackling mental health; and promoting healthy lifestyles.
The core theme of the project is around bringing communities together; from different backgrounds on a level playing field in terms of equity and equality. The Thriving Community Project is designed to bring communities together in two ways:
1) Through the medium of sports and leisure; enjoying and achieving
2) Through the celebratory events marking King Charles coronation year; which will include traditional folk music and bring different communities together.
The celebratory element was open to all communities and was publicised using outreach community links and also through utilisation of social media for promotion of the event. The other key area and theme was helping people and community members suffering from mental health and signposting and supporting them to services in a timely fashion
What difference will it make
The project aims and objectives and outcomes directly contributed towards creating communities that are active; where sport was used as a medium to tackle increased levels of obesity and sedentary behaviour which exacerbates health inequalities in the BAME community. The celebratory element after each of the events will have created a wider and increased interest from communities to take up a healthy lifestyle whilst enjoying and achieving.
A number of activities, ranging from cricket in the summer to badminton in the autumn/winter time are planned through out the year to reach out to as many community members as possible. Further updates will be added on here when the project evaluation has been completed
